More About the Apple TV

Apple TV is a digital media receiver made and sold by Apple Inc. It is a small form factor network appliance designed to play IPTV digital content originating from the iTunes Store, Netflix, YouTube, Flickr, MobileMe or any Mac OS X or Windows computer running iTunes onto an enhanced-definition or high-definition widescreen television.

Apple offered a preview of the device in September 2006 and began shipping it the following March. It initially shipped with a 40GB hard disk; a 160GB version was introduced two months later and the earlier model was ultimately discontinued.

In September 2010, Steve Jobs announced a second-generation version of the Apple TV. About a quarter of the size and one-third of the price of the original Apple TV, the new device can stream rented content from iTunes and video from computers or iOS devices via AirPlay. The new version has 8 gigabytes of flash storage, possibly for caching purposes. However, all content is drawn from online or locally connected sources.

He’s already kicked the Discman to the curb and revolutionized the entire structure of the music industry. But so far, Steve Jobs just doesn’t seem to have the touch when it comes to TV.

Apple Inc. announced Wednesday it is trying to adjust the reception of its Apple TV device, which delivers video content to TV sets without a cable or satellite subscription, but which has so far had a lukewarm reaction from consumers. The Apple chief executive officer made the announcement, which includes lower pricing and added features, at an event in San Francisco.

Set-top boxes like Apple’s are an attempt by consumer electronics makers to disrupt the incumbent businesses that govern entertainment in the living room. They are a way to rent movies without Blockbuster, and a way to watch television for a small per-episode fee rather than through a pricey cable or satellite subscription. But analysts said on Wednesday that while Apple’s device will provide new competition for other set-top boxes, it does not present much of a threat to cable and satellite companies.

“Consumers don’t really want to purchase programs on a one-off basis,” said Bruce Leichtman, a consumer media researcher and president of Leichtman Research Group. “It’s not a natural way for consumers to consume video … They’re used to it being part of a package.”

The only difference from other set-top box devices, Mr. Leichtman said, is the Apple brand. The ability to stream movie and TV rentals from the iPad or a computer’s iTunes account is new. But another new addition – Netflix, with its streaming movie and TV rentals – is available on roughly 100 other devices besides Apple TV. (A Netflix representative would not confirm on Wednesday whether it will be available on Apple TV in Canada when the service launches here this fall.)

“If you’re a true-blue Apple user, this is the product for you,” said James McQuivey, an analyst with Forrester Research. “And if you haven’t realized that you can just walk your laptop across the room and connect it to your TV, bully for you … Apple TV’s your product.”

Despite the unenthusiastic response from industry watchers, set-top boxes such as Apple’s do provide a way for consumers who are devoted to the idea of cutting the cord, a real alternative to cable or satellite. And the devices are another avenue for cash-strapped content providers to get paid for the shows they make. Apple announced on Wednesday that ABC and Fox will both offer rentals of their television shows directly through Apple TV. The networks’ parent companies, Walt Disney Co. and News Corp., have been working on strategies to expand the ways they bring in revenues for their big network shows, beyond advertising sales. They are two of the owners of popular online video website Hulu, which announced the launch of a subscription service in the U.S. in June.

Cable channels, however, have been more reluctant to go over the heads of the cable and satellite firms that kick over a share of the valuable subscriber fees to them. In Canada, you can get some shows, such as Mad Men for $3.49 per episode on iTunes, but try finding an addictive HBO hit like True Blood.

On top of that, cable and satellite companies have been launching more and more offerings for their subscribers that go beyond traditional TV, whether it’s video-on-demand services that allow viewers to tap into shows and rent movies any time through their sets, or personal video recorders that augment a subscription with content that people can record and watch for free whenever it’s convenient – not to mention websites to watch programs safely on the computer, and plans to offer more on mobile devices.

“Apple is going up against a much more defensive, entrenched competition” than it did with the music industry, said Todd Mitchell, a media, cable and satellite analyst with Kaufman Bros. in New York. “There’s so much money in the distribution of movies and television, and the advertising behind them, that the content providers would never let their business model deteriorate the way the music guys did … [Apple] could be successful in this space, but not at a scale that would be disruptive to the incumbents.”
